Did you ever think you would see such a thing on the HSE website? Did we ever really believe that everything we had fought for was going to come true? We will have to wait and see how abortion provision plays out across the country and what sort of barriers will exist because of the 3 day wait period, refusal of care, lack of providers in certain parts of the country but it will be a far cry better than what we have had up to now.
The legislation is problematic and we cannot forget that. We need to be monitoring provision and problems so that we can work to address those issues and we need to keep an eye on those trying to block abortion access for people. Pregnant people must feel safe and supported when they decide that an abortion is the right option for them.
The Abortion Rights Campaign, the Irish Family Planning Association, LawyersForChoice, DoctorsForChoice, myself and many others will still be actively involved in how this roll-out is happening and will be able to point people in the right direction for answers to their questions. In the meantime, there is now abortion information on the HSE website and a freephone number that will be live from January 1st.
Improving legislation and abortion access would be one of my priorities if you vote for me on the NUI Panel of the Seanad elections – register to vote today.
